Your Florida Construction Exemption Expired. Now What?
If your exemption is no longer active, Florida's construction rules count you like any other owner. You can apply again if you qualify, or get a policy.
Last checked 2026-10-31 against FL DFS, Florida Statutes and FWCJUA sources.
How do I get covered fast?
If Florida requires coverage for your business, the simplest path is to have a policy in place before work starts. Bright Coast can quote it and explain the rules in plain language.

Should I reapply for an exemption or buy a policy?
It depends on whether you still qualify and who else works for you. If you meet every exemption condition, reapplying may make sense. Other employees still count toward Florida's one-or-more construction rule, so they need coverage either way. Bright Coast can talk through your options at (239) 475-0361.
Neither path is wrong. The point is to be covered or properly exempt before the next job starts.

Quick answers
How do I check whether my Florida construction exemption is still active?
Call the DFS exemption help line at (850) 413-1609 to confirm your status. The Division of Workers' Compensation handles construction exemptions, so it's the authoritative source. Check before your next job, since working uncovered can trigger a stop-work order.
How much does a Florida construction exemption cost?
The application fee is $50.00. You also need an active corporation or LLC with the Florida Division of Corporations, at least 10 percent ownership, a valid driver license not expired more than 30 days, and no ties to an active stop-work order. No more than three officers per company or affiliated group can be exempt.
Can I get an exemption if I have a stop-work order?
No, not while the order is active. Florida won't accept an exemption applicant tied to an active stop-work order. Conditional release from the order requires getting coverage, paying $1,000 down on the penalty and agreeing to a payment schedule. Deal with the order first, then look at a new exemption.
