Getting a Florida Workers' Comp Certificate Quickly

A certificate of insurance (COI) shows a contractor or client that you have workers' comp. How fast you can get one depends on whether a policy is already in place.

How do I get a workers' comp certificate if I already have a policy?

If you're a Bright Coast client with an active policy, Bright Coast says you can access certificates 24/7 through its self-service client portal. Use it to pull your certificate, then send it to the contractor or client who asked. If you can't get in, call (239) 475-0361.

Contractors often ask for your certificate before you start, because Florida requires them to confirm subcontractors have coverage before work begins.

What if I don't have a policy yet?

You need a bound policy before any certificate can be issued. To move quickly, have your company details, payroll, a description of your work and your headcount ready, including officers or LLC members.

Start with Bright Coast's Florida class code lookup if you're unsure how your work is classified.

Then call (239) 475-0361 with your information in front of you.

How can I verify a workers' comp certificate from a subcontractor?

Check it against an independent source rather than trusting the paper alone. FWCJUA's website has a Verify COI tool and a link to a proof of coverage database. If a sub turns out to have no coverage, Florida treats its workers as your employees, and you pay benefits for a work injury.

Do this before the sub begins work. That's when Florida expects contractors to confirm coverage.

Quick answers

Can I get a Florida workers' comp certificate the same day?

It depends on whether you already have a policy. Existing Bright Coast clients can access certificates 24/7 through the self-service client portal, according to Bright Coast. Having your business details, payroll and work description ready helps you avoid delays.

Why does a general contractor want my certificate before I start?

Because Florida makes the contractor responsible if you're uninsured. Contractors must make sure every subcontractor has workers' comp before work begins. If a sub has none, the sub's workers become the contractor's employees, and the contractor pays benefits for a work injury. Your certificate shows them you're covered.

Where can I check whether a Florida business has workers' comp?

Start with FWCJUA's website, which links to a proof of coverage database and has a Verify COI tool. Use them to confirm what a certificate says before relying on it. For questions about a Bright Coast policy you hold, call (239) 475-0361 or email support@brightcoastins.com.
