How do I get covered fast?
If Florida requires coverage for your business, the simplest path is to have a policy in place before work starts. Bright Coast can quote it and explain the rules in plain language.

How the roofing class-code rate works
Bright Coast's lookup lists Florida class code 5551 at 6.752 per $100 of payroll, verified against the live FWCJUA table on October 25, 2026. Treat that number as a reference rate, not a quote. Your actual premium also depends on your payroll, your experience mod and the carrier that writes the policy.
Code 5551 carries the description ROOFING - ALL KINDS in Bright Coast's lookup.
The rate is stated per $100 of payroll, so it applies to the payroll that falls under that code. We don't show sample premiums, because yours depends on your own payroll, experience mod and carrier.
FWCJUA, Florida's residual market for workers' comp, publishes rates and a pricing tool on its site.

Subcontractors and certificates for roofers
Get proof of coverage from every sub before they start. DFS says contractors must make sure subcontractors have workers' comp before work begins. If a sub has none, its workers become your employees, and you pay benefits if one of them is hurt on the job. Keep a current certificate on file for each sub.
FWCJUA's site has a Verify COI tool and a proof of coverage database link you can use to check a sub's coverage.
If Bright Coast writes your policy, Bright Coast says you can access your own certificates 24/7 through its self-service client portal.

Quick answers
What happens if my roofing business works without coverage?
You risk a stop-work order and a penalty. Under s. 440.107, the penalty is 2 times the premium you would have paid on your payroll for the uncovered period in the preceding 12 months, or $1,000, whichever is greater. In some cases the lookback is 24 months.
What if my roofing sub doesn't have workers' comp?
Then its workers become your employees under Florida rules, and you pay benefits if one of them is injured on the job. DFS says contractors must confirm subs have coverage before they begin work. FWCJUA's site has a Verify COI tool and a proof of coverage database link you can use to check.
